February 11, 2022 - Test Flight Eastern Shore |
||||||
The plane has been down for a couple of months -- an electronic ignition issue and a cylinder number three issue. It's finally all fixed so it's time for a test flight. The first test flight was a few times around the pattern, then land to check for leaks. On the second test flight I crossed the bay to let her run. I had to since I was breaking in a new, used cylinder. I was running at 25 squared. There was a pretty good tailwind at 2,000 feet heading north-northeast because I looked down and my ground speed was 234 mph!
I normally use my Canon Digital Rebel for air to ground shots but all I had was my smartphone today. I was surprised by how good the pictures came out.
This is a shot of Suicide Bridge Restaurant on Cabin Creek, which offshoots to the east off the Choptank River. Our family ate there once; nice place.

Looking south at the Blackwater Swamp area.
Lots of rivers, creeks and waterways down there.

I saw the smoke and decided to investigate.
Pretty good fire down there. You can see the areas that have already been burnt out. I wonder if this is a controlled burn? Don't worry, by late spring it will all be green.
Lot of burned areas this year.
Blue areas (water), green areas (evergreen trees), brown areas (dead marsh grass), black areas (burnt marsh grass), gray areas (trees with no leaves).

Looking down at Cambridge Airport. We were shocked when our favorite on-the-field restaurant, Katie's, closed at the end of January with two weeks notice. Here's the story: link. Sad. We've lost a number of on-field restaurants the last few years -- Ocean City, NJ, Chester-County, Smoketown, and now Cambridge.
I stopped in at Bay Bridge Airport to refuel.

I chatted with the owner of this nice RV-9.
My picture doesn't show it but this plane's tires are all flat. Never a good sign.
Some kind of mansion turned special events center up by the Sassafras River.
Fields outlined by a thick fence of trees.
